Modeled after the thousands of other "open streets" or "ciclovia" events that have been organized around the world and across the United States, Active Streets temporarily opens stretches of roadway for people to walk, jog, skate, bike and more in the San Gabriel Valley. The event series is organized byActiveSGV, an SGV-based non-profit organization dedicated to realizing a safer, more sustainable and equitable San Gabriel Valley.
There is no "right" way to experience open streets. Participants may join and depart the event route anywhere they wish. We only ask that you be considerate and courteous of others along the way, enjoy the event at your own pace, and check out the many local businesses, organizations, community groups and more who can be found along the event routes.
Event Goals:
Promote sustainable, active modes of transportation.
Encourage play, community connections, and exploration of the San Gabriel Valley's diverse communities.
Improve the health of people of all incomes, abilities, and backgrounds.
History: ActiveSGV's first open streets event -- "626 Golden Streets" -- was staged in partnership with the City of South Pasadena and seven other SGV communities in March 2017 to celebrate what was then known as the Metro 'Gold' Line Azusa extension. After the first successful event, organizers reconvened and developed the concept for "Mission-to-Mission", the second route in ActiveSGV's open streets event series in Spring 2019. This was followed by "SGV Streets and Treats" in October 2019. After a two year pandemic delay, ActiveSGV staff partnered with the SGVCOG to request Metro Open Streets program funding for a second "Mission-to-Mission" in 2022, followed by "Heart-of-the-Foothills" and "ArroyoFest" in 2023, "Mission-Meets-Eclectic" in 2024, and "Mission-at-Twilight" in 2025.
Due to multiple changes in the Metro rail naming systems -- the "Gold" Line became the "L" Line and now "A" line -- event organizers updated the original "626 Golden Streets" event name to "Active Streets" in 2024.
