Save-the-Dates for More #OpenStreets Fun in 2020!

2/21/2020

One of Gabe's favorite things to do at the start of every new year is pull out his calendar and save-the-dates for more #OpenStreets | #ciclovia fun! At least 8 major ciclovias are scheduled to take place across Los Angeles County in 2020, not including all the events organizations are planning in other parts of California.

As huge fans of these transformative events, Gabe and his friends at #ActiveSGV team have once again put together a list of some of the most interesting and exciting ciclovias scheduled for the year ahead. The calendar includes several new routes and even one of the first twilight events in SoCal, appropriately scheduled for All Hallow's Eve!  Get a head start on creative costume ideas, and be sure to give Gabe and friends a high 5 if you seen them exploring car-free streets outside the San Gabriel Valley.

Also, be sure to thank Metro Los Angeles staff if you see them. Their Open Streets Program makes most of these events possible!

2016 will be the most open-streets-friendly in SoCal, ever, with over a half a dozen  major ciclovias scheduled between March and October 2016. In addition to 626 Golden Streets presented by Metro, several events will feature completely new routes and neighborhoods to explore, including four southeast LA cities on May 15th and a host of San Gabriel Valley cities on June 12th and 26th. If you enjoy exploring LA's diversity by foot, bike, or skate, you will want to save these dates for an active day with friends and family!

What are "Open Streets"?
Open Streets events or ciclovias are temporary street closures for automobile traffic that "open" roads for community members of all ages to walk, bike, dance, play, jog, run, socialize and more!  Popularized over 40 years ago in Bogota, Columbia, whose “ciclovia” takes place every Sunday and public holiday from 7am to 2pm with an estimated 2 million participants spread out over 70 miles, these simple but powerful events are relatively new to southern California; the first and largest regular event in SoCal (CicLAvia) was only hosted in October 2010. Check out this video for a better idea of what these wonderful community events can look like.
